Rottenburg alto in F at A = 415 Hz

Johannes Hyacinthus Rottemburgh (Brussels 1672-1756), a luthier and woodwind instrument-maker, was also a violinist of the Court Chapel. There are grounds for supposing a German ancestry and a link with the Rottemburger family of organ-builders in Salzburg.

Our copy is of an instrument now located in the Musée des Instruments de Musique in Brussels, together with two other similar examples there. On repeated trips to Brussels I had the opportunity to meet the head of the museum’s conservation laboratory who allowed me access to these instruments enabling me to study them and measure them in great detail at my leisure. This instrument was my introduction to recorder-making.
